Superintendent Barile's Career Bio

Career Biography

Dr. Barile has been an educator for 31 years. He began his career in education as a classroom teacher working at Harborside Middle School in Milford, CT.  There he taught grade six language arts, science and math. Later, he became a grade eight science teacher and team leader.  During his time in the classroom, Dr. Barile served Foran High School as an assistant football and track coach.  Upon receiving his sixth year administrative degree he entered into a new position in Fairfield as the Dean of Students at Roger Ludlowe Middle School. A year later the draw of Milford beckoned Dr. Barile to return to serve as the Assistant Principal at West Shore Middle School where he would spend the next three years.  In 2002 he was appointed to become the Principal of John F. Kennedy Elementary School.  After four years at the elementary school, Dr. Barile was asked by his superintendent to take over the principalship back at West Shore Middle School to replace the retiring principal.  After serving in this role, Dr. Barile was promoted to take on the responsibility of leading Joseph A. Foran High School as its new principal. Upon returning to the school where he once coached and now had become its leader, Dr. Barile led the faculty and students through several years of challenges above and beyond the regular mission of teaching and learning.  The high school was in the process of its NEASC Accreditation review and the initial phases of a 40-million-dollar renovation. He led the Foran students to increase their academic performance on both the CAPT and Advanced Placement assessments, to increase participation in extracurricular activities, and added drama, lacrosse, and indoor track to the program offerings.

While a building administrator, Dr. Barile found time to serve as an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Education at Southern Connecticut.  He taught Master’s Degree and sixth-year level courses in child development, curriculum & learning, and leadership development.

As Superintendent in Bethany, he engaged the community in developing the long-range strategic planning initiative. Dr. Barile led Bethany with a resolute agenda to pursue excellence.  This included advancing student achievement through personalized learning supported by high-quality teachers, staff, and administration, state-of-the-art technology, viable curriculum, and parental and community engagement.

Now beginning his tenth year as the Brookfield Public School’s Superintendent, Dr. Barile has established partnerships with the community, which have been foundational in developing financial and regulatory controls, a major area of need when he began his tenure. Furthermore, the development of a Strategic Plan which has become the guiding document for providing a world-class education for each student is embraced.  Leadership reorganization, professional learning for teachers and administrators, new math, English Language Arts, and science programming are just some of the major accomplishments under his leadership.  The continuation of curriculum alignment and enhancement will be ongoing, and shifts to the one-to-one technology program and technical infrastructure will be taking place, along with the addition of American Sign Language at Brookfield High School and a new, mobile World Language Lab at Whisconier Middle School.

Importantly, Dr. Barile and the team brought Social & Emotional learning to Brookfield. Schools are implementing the Yale, RULER Approach.

After years of planning and construction, we moved into our brand new elementary school, which has combined Center School, and Huckleberry Hill, and incorporated the fifth graders who had been housed at Whisconier Middle School. All Grade PK – 5 students in Brookfield are now educated in one, state-of-the-art elementary school facility on the former Huckleberry Hill campus. On September 5, 2023, students, staff, and faculty moved into Candlewood Lake Elementary School!

Most recently, in addition to implementing new foundational reading and math programming, Brookfield Public Schools is supporting the enhancement of school climate. The school administration and faculty will receive training in Reflective Intelligence through a partnership with Boston College. School leadership will also receive follow-up support in the 4 Disciplines of Leadership that Influence Teacher Efficacy from Dr. Barile’s original research on this subject.

Having moved up through the ranks from teacher to assistant principal, to principal of elementary, middle, and high school and currently superintendent has certainly provided Dr. Barile with a unique perspective and comprehensive leadership experience.

As Dr. Barile fervently reminds all of us, "Public Education is in the midst of transformative change and that change has been accelerated over the past few years. Over the past several years the implementation of the Common Core State Standards, school reform legislation, and new accountability measures including a new phase of dramatic changes to teacher and administrator evaluation, student assessments, and rigorous NEASC accreditation standards are concurrent with a shift in how districts and schools define quality education. These transformative times continue to require educators, schools, and districts to do things differently regardless of past achievements, or the comforts of the status quo. Brookfield has staff with the experience and education, and who possess the commitment, skills, creativity and work ethic necessary to ascend from excellence to the pinnacle of greatness. The mission for educators is now on ensuring that (a) every student masters the learning expectations rather than educators simply providing the opportunity to learn, (b) on strong instructional leadership rather than only school management, (c) to collaborative teams of educators facilitating personalized learning for students rather than reliance on the lone expert in the classroom, and (d) to coherent district improvement planning as opposed to schools functioning as silos independent of the system."
